What is Sex Therapy?
Sex therapy is a specialized type of psychotherapy that requires additional training by a licensed mental health professional. This gives them specific expertise and knowledge to dive into issues around sexual identity, behaviors, and problems. For me specifically as a sex therapist, there are certain topics that I specialize in. These include:
Exploring sexual identity and gender
Sex and consent education
Helping those in relationship navigate infidelity, sexual problems, or a need to rekindle their sex life
The decision to explore kink, polyamory, open relationships, or swinging
Women with low or diminished desire
Women with difficulty or inability to orgasm not related to medical conditions
People experiencing problems with out-of-control sexual behaviors (seeking prostitutes, excessive pornography use, etc)
Helping individuals or those in relationship navigate the impact of purity culture or religion on their sex life
Sex therapy will never involve having sex in front of or with your therapist. However, you may receive exercises to try on your own or with a partner(s). A good sex therapist will create an environment where you feel safe to discuss and receive feedback around these topics.
Many people starting sex therapy feel embarrassment, discomfort, or awkwardness around discussing sex. You may have spent months or even years wondering if you are ‘normal’ or ‘broken’. With a sex therapist, you can be reassured that I have most likely heard it before. Sex therapists have a great deal of training that gives us an approach that is sex-positive and non-judgmental. If it sounds like you could benefit from any of these topics, please get in touch today!
